To All Our Road Church Folks!

Transition Letter from Bob Elmer:

As we were scheduling the Executive Committee meeting for November, I realized it would be Pastor Ron’s last. He has served us well. There are many still in the congregation that went through that "much too long" transition period after Mer and Lois Bilhorn returned to Wisconsin, who truly appreciate all that he brought to our beloved Church. As fate would have it, Pastor Ron was facing some personal challenges in his own life at that time and it appeared that he needed us as much as we needed him.  Dare I say, it was a relationship made in heaven? Pastor Ron loves Road Church and its Congregation. And we love him. We will always be grateful for his leadership, initiative, inspiration, guidance, candor, humor and his love of Pot Luck Suppers. As you’d expect, during his tenure, we experienced some highs and some lows but his level headed approach always seemed to keep things on an even keel.

Out of our respect for Ron and his wishes The Executive Committee and The Search Committee worked with him towards a retirement date. A time when he could close The Road Church Chapter of his life as its Pastor and begin a new one, going in a direction that has yet to be determined.  During the search process, once again he agreed to serve his Church and its Congregation by staying on until we could find the next heir to The Road Church Pulpit. It bears repeating that having Ron continue in the Pulpit as an “interim” was invaluable to the Church in ways that only those that have lived through the weekly “Mystery Minister Days” can only understand.

So here we are, on the eve of welcoming Norm and Barbara Erlendson to our Road Church family and I’m very excited for what is ahead for our Church. You see, I am one of the “old guard.” Ada and I first came to Road Church 40 years ago, in the Mer and Lois Bilhorn “heydays.” They lived across the street from the Parish House which is a special story in itself, but like Mer and Lois, Norm and Barbara now live in Stonington. I called those days the Mer and Lois “heydays” because back then we had a Youth Group, we had a Mens’ Group, we had a regular Saturday Morning Prayer Breakfast, we had Childrens' programs that included Christmas Plays, we had an active Sunday School and when you visit the Parish House you’ll see the remarkable painting on the wall by former parishioner Sue Stafford that was once our Nursery. Like so many of you, I look forward to some of those programs returning to The Road Church and I’m confident that the team of Norm and Barbara can get us back on that road. I know that because of his interest in doing Outreach, Pastor Norm has already been asked to fill the Clergy position on The Stonington Commission on Aging. And if any of you have met and talked with the lovely and supportive Barbara, you know that she will be blazing her own trail as well.

I was honored to have had the opportunity to step into The Moderators shoes, at the pleasure of the Nominating Committee and congregation, on the passing of our beloved “Uncle Chet Perkins.” I am no Chet Perkins, but the one thing we did have in common is our love of The Road Church. I’m confident that he would have welcomed Norm and Barbara as I did, with open arms. Someone once said, you never want to be the guy that follows the guy, you want to be the guy that follows the guy that follows the guy.  Pastor Norm doesn’t have that luxury as he is the guy that is following one marvelous guy in Pastor Ron. Pastor Ron has indeed made his mark on "The Road" and it's one he should be very proud of. I hope you all join me in looking forward to giving Pastor Norm the same opportunity. As for Ron, I’m looking forward to sharing my pew with him on the occasional Sunday, when he is so inclined.

Yours in Service to The Road Church, I am,

Robert E.P. Elmer III, Moderator

Treasurer’s Message from Charles Jones

“The people were happy when they saw what their leaders had been willing to give. The leaders had given freely. With their whole heart they had given everything to the Lord. King David was filled with joy.” – 1 Chronicles 29:9

Thank you for your continued financial support to the Road Church. Without your support we wouldn’t be able to live out God’s love daily by worshipping together, celebrating together, regularly lifting up one another in prayer and supporting local outreach ministries in our community.

Yours in Christ,

Charles

Times of Service

Our regular Sunday services are every Sunday morning at 10:00 AM. We welcome visitors of all ages. NOTE: Our SUMMER morning worship begins at 9:30 AM starting Father's Day Sunday in June until the Sunday of Labor Day weekend in September.

Coffee Hour

Coffee hour is held in the Fellowship Hall the last Sunday of each month following the service - unless otherwise stated on our schedule. All are welcome. Are you interested in helping with coffee hour?

Communion

We celebrate Communion, or the Lord’s Supper as it is sometimes called, on the first Sunday of each month, Maundy Thursday, and World Wide Communion Sunday.

Communion is the most revered of the sacraments at our church. We invite all who profess Jesus as their Lord and Savoir to join us at the table. We believe that Jesus is present at our table and we accept His invitation with great humility and love. The table is for us a time of remembrance and thanksgiving for the sacrifice our Savoir made and continues to make for us.

Bible Study

Bible Study is held every Tuesday morning in the Parish House. Bible Study focuses on one book at a time, and discussions range from the details of the book itself to how the Bible teachings relate to today's world. We follow a relaxed format, sometimes including video to help with the discussions. The group gathers for coffee and donuts at 9:30 AM for about half an hour, then sits for discussion at 10:00 AM and is typically done by 11:00 AM. Please join us even if you can only make it once in awhile.

Children

The 1st Congregational Church of Stontington welcomes children of all ages. If you want to participate in the service without your baby, please tell a Greeter and a caring volunteer will take your infant to our Sunday School. Otherwise, please make yourself comfortable in the bench with your child. Pastor Ron says that even a fussy baby's sounds are music in the church. Soon you will notice that parishioners all around you are waving, smiling, and cooing at your baby. If you become uncomfortable with a baby's fussiness, or need to change a diaper, or otherwise need some privacy, there is a cozy space in the Parish Hall for you. You can sit in the rocking chair there, with your infant, and watch the Sunday School children in their lesson, or sit in the parlor for more peace and quiet. A kitchen and a bathroom are nearby. We hope to have the service piped in on speakers by early spring, so that you will not miss the the service.
